Jean Descas, a barrel maker of the Entre Deux-Mers area, founded the Maison Descas and started to sell wines in 1861. During the phylloxéra crisis, Jean Descas was able to provide quality products to his customers, while many wine merchants had great difficulties to get their supplies. Thanks to his ability to select good wines, Jean Descas got through these tormented times and earned trust of his customers.
Located in the heart of Bordeaux, the Château Descas symbolizes the great success of its past owner. Jean Descas was an audacious man as he chose to base his offices at the opposite side of the traditional Chartrons district where most of Bordeaux wine merchants were established. The Château is also the evidence of his avant-gardist state of mind : considered as very modern, this building was fitted with small wagons and elevators to facilitate handling.
In 1979, the Merlaut family took control of the Maison Descas. Denis Merlaut made the bet to modernize Descas while respecting the traditional and familial values of this Maison. His son Raphaël Merlaut joined the company in 2005 and manages the sales departement since 2 years, defining the company main objectives:
- Respond to current market expectations
- Anticipate tomorrow’s needs
